Training Online: Russia’s New Law on Onshoring Foreign Internet Companies & Privacy Law Updates

Date: 9.12.2021, 11:00-12:30 Mow (10:00-11:30 Hki)

By 01 January 2022, foreign e-commerce and other online companies will be required to open offices in Russia. According to the onshoring law No. 236-ФЗ dated 01 July 2021, these companies must obey the national laws, register with local authorities, and fulfil other requirements. The law will apply to

  • any non-Russian entities that host websites and apps intended for Russian users,
  • websites and apps supporting user accounts, posting, and messaging,
  • internet services having more than 500 000 Russian users daily, and
  • some other online businesses.

This year, Russia notably updated its privacy legislation. The recent changes include new state supervision rules, increased amounts of fines for breaching the personal data law, and restrictions to the processing of publicly available data. More amendments, such as consumer privacy rules and new consent requirements, are expected in 2022.

Our speakers will share insight into the new onshoring law and summarize the current and upcoming changes to the Russian privacy legislation.
